Radios, Phone Lines and Bearcat Scanners
We aren’t actually a family who would spend hours talking on the phones with family and friend catching up and keeping in touch. We just spend the minimum amount of time needed to communicate and we end the call. We are also like that with mobile phones, even with SMS messaging. So I guess you would not be surprised to find out that we have been without a land line phone since 2006. We just weren’t willing to pay for something when people can reach us through our mobile phones and we are almost always online (through the internet) anyways.
Times have changed though. I have a kid who goes to school. Perhaps he needs to call a friend or classmate regarding an assignment. I also want a landline to call in case an emergency happens. However, we really do not have much friends in our area so calling friends would be classified as long-distance already, therefore, more expensive.
Recently, I set aside a budget for prepaid load for my mobile phone. It is such a pain having a phone and needing to call somebody only to find out you don’t have any credits left! I also ordered a phone which can call overseas for free. Now if only we can convince my parents to have Bearcat Scanners so we can just “radio” them in if we need to – they live 5 minutes away but when it rains, we cannot go out as the dirt road to their place becomes muddied.
